Frequently asked questions

At White Academy we’re driven by providing the family as a whole with information. If you still have unanswered questions please view our Frequently Asked Questions section below. If your questions still haven’t been answered we’d love to hear from you. Feel free to contact us directly.

What is White Academy?

We are a hybrid high school, giving students the option to work from home or our facility with highly trained certified teachers and staff. Our school offers opportunities for students to graduate with a high school diploma and complete coursework at a post-secondary institution. All students’ grades 9-12 are made aware of these offerings in our student handbook.

How do I apply to White Academy?

Applications can be downloaded from our website, or picked up from our center at 1300 W Canfield St. Detroit, MI 48201 United States. Applications must be returned with a copy of students, social security card, Michigan shot records, birth certificate, transcript, and discipline report.

What if I am an English Language Learner?

The Academy seeks to provide every child, regardless of national origin or native language, quality, and meaningful educational instruction. Each students is evaluated on his/her English language proficiency. Consequently, students who are English Language Learners (ELLs) are provided instructional services through ELL programs which are designed to meet each students unique needs.

What age do I have to have to complete the program?

Students have until the age of 21 to have all course work complete in order to graduate with their high school diploma.

Are there any fees?

Our Academies are a tuition institution free for Michigan residences!

Can I start courses at any time?

Courses follow the semester system like in a regular school. Semester 1 runs from September to the end of January and semester 2 runs from February to the end of June. It is recommended that you make application for fall courses no later than mid-August and winter courses no later than early January.

Are online courses right for me?

For a majority of students, this form of course delivery works well. Students must have high motivation, computer familiarity, and the ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Our facility offers students the ability to interact with their peers, seek help, or just change environment. Although there is daily contact with others in the class, there may not be any face-to-face meetings. For students with different learning styles, taking online courses may not be an appropriate choice.

Do I have to attend classes?

Students do not have to come to our location but, yes, our online program requires some attendance in our web classrooms. Teachers will post a question in collaboration corner weekly and students will be required to respond to the post, which will count as their attendance for the week.

Is attendance checked?

Attendance is checked weekly. Your login dates, times and the areas of the course that you visit are logged. Your teacher will clarify what is required of you in terms of course participation. Students who fail to complete attendance checks will be called and reminded. A meeting at the center will be required if student continues to have a number of failed attendance checks.

Do I need additional course material such as textbooks or special programs?

No. All course material should be provided to students once he/she logs into his/her courses, which included all support material and programs. White Academy has made arrangements with software and major publishers to ensure all our students have legal access to the resources necessary to complete their course work.

What equipment is required?

Our institution provides each student with a laptop and internet service free of charge for the duration of the program.  Equipment is the property of GEE  Preparatory and must be returned upon completion of the program.

Do credits from other schools and programs count toward my diploma? (Equivalency)

Student transcripts are evaluated on a course by course basis. Student credits can be transferred to our institution as long as they meet our graduation requirements. Foreign transcripts must be translated and evaluated before submission to the Academy.
